Motor oil
Also called: engine oil · used motor oil · lubricating oil · crankcase oil · sump oil
Dog
Keep it away
Described signs
drooling, vomiting, diarrhea or the opposite, constipation with dry stools, loss of appetite, weight loss and low energy; if the coat gets soaked and they lick it, the gut upset repeats, and if any oil reaches the lungs, coughing and laboured breathing. Watch out for used oil and for older formulations: they can carry toxic additives or contaminants, lead among them, and then the risk is no longer that of the oil itself
Cat
Keep it away
Described signs
drooling, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, loss of appetite and low energy, nearly always from licking the stained coat for hours; if any reaches the lungs, coughing and laboured breathing, and on the skin, irritation under the oil. Watch out for used oil and for older formulations: they can carry toxic additives or contaminants, lead among them, and then the risk is no longer that of the oil itself
