Peanut

Arachis hypogaea

Also called: peanuts · groundnut · groundnuts · roasted peanuts · salted peanuts · peanuts in shell · peanut butter · peanut oil

Dog

Care needed

Described signs

Vomiting, diarrhea, low energy or belly pain, especially after a lot of them, after salted ones, or after eating a good amount of peanut butter. A peanut in its shell can choke a small dog or block its gut. Separately from all of that: some peanut butters contain xylitol. Check the ingredient list, because if it is in there this is no longer mild, it is potentially lethal to a dog, and the signs are vomiting, low energy, loss of coordination and seizures from a drop in blood sugar.

Care needed

Described signs

Vomiting, diarrhea or stomach upset from the fat and the salt. A whole peanut, or one in its shell, can choke a small animal or block its gut. If it is peanut butter, check the ingredient list before giving it to any animal in the house: a few contain xylitol, which is potentially lethal to dogs.
